A lot of books have been published and only a few reach the calibre of best seller. What Iooking for from advocate book readers is what really are the ingredients in a book that make it a best seller. Is it the plot, propoganda, publisher, marketing, and or prestige of an author. There is no one answer, but I am sure there are clues that everyone who reads a book looks for before deciding to purchase and invest his or her time in reading a new book. What's the specific makeup of a best selling book?
Personal taste by individual readers. Tons of people like horror, but tons of people don't. Same goes for romance or any other genre. There really aren't any 'ingredients' to writing a best seller as opposed to writing a book that sells less. Best sellers are a product of the author's writing style and ability to tell a story, the publisher and their willingness to promote the book with marketing, reviews from book reviewers, word of mouth from readers who've bought the book, read it, and enjoyed it, and availability of the book to buyers.
The more well known a writer is, the more likely they are of developing a following, which in turn leads to more sales. Some first time writers are breakout successes because the writer as well as the publisher work on getting the book out there to the public.
I have a writer friend who made the best seller list for her publisher the first month it was released. She's a brand new writer, this was her first book. She did a lot of promotion work for it, while the publisher did very little because she was an unknown. While the publisher liked her work enough to publish it, marketing is expensive and reserves are usually given to proven writers. That makes a difference. If my friend had not done promotional work on her own, her book might not have done so well. In the past year, her book has been a best seller for various bookstores who chart their own sales.
Many things go hand in hand with a book becoming a best seller. Were it as simple as a 'recipe' there would be no books that weren't best sellers. What's the specific makeup of a best selling book?

First off, you have to believe in the story and be able to tell it well. The best stories are the ones that make you feel like someone is sitting there trying to gauge your attention instead of just relaying information. If you can do this, than the rest is getting a good publisher and luck. Even Stephen King had to go through a ton of rejection before he sold Carrie. Before that, he went through even more trying to sell his first piece to a magazine.

Ok I read all the time. Atleast 3 to 4 a week. I look at who wrote it. I look at credit that other authors or other people have reviewed it. I look at the cover, then read the back and the little part they give you in the front. Its usually something that will stand out in the book for the readers. Then I do buy it. If it doesn't have my attention by page 50 on a small book or page 100 on a big book I put it down and write them off my list. I love all kinds of books so I do read alot of new authors. I try to see who is the newest and read their reviews to see what others think
I hope this helps
